9 Essential considerations when purchasing a tent

Peak Height

The advantage of having a high ceiling tent is that it helps you to stand on your feet while changing your clothes and enjoying the tent’s spaciousness.

Tents have almost vertical walls which help maximise tent space and height. You also get tents that have family-friendly features, such as space dividers, collapsible doors.

Dome-style tents

Have greater strength to withstand strong winds and therefore prove more effective in volatile weather conditions. Although such tents ‘ walls are slightly more inclined, resulting in a slight reduction in area, they are high in the middle.

Tent Floor Length

The tenets typically have a length of 84 to 88 inches. If your height is six feet or more, you should look for a tent that has a floor-length of ninety inches.

Tent Doors

When choosing a tent, you should know how many doors it should have, the form and the orientation. If you are going to camp with your mates, having more than one door helps to avoid inconvenience to others when someone needs to use the bathroom at night. Tents shaped like cabins are exceptional in this way. You should also test that the doors are noisy and that they can be zipped open quickly. Doors equipped with YKK zips don’t easily and quickly split or sag.

Tent Poles

Pole architecture helps to decide how convenient or difficult the erection would be. Many family tents now made are freestanding, meaning they don’t need any stakes to set them up. The fact that you can pick up your tent and move it to an alternate site before staking it is a significant benefit of such a design. You can also quickly shake the dirt off before you bring it down.

More poles enable the faster setup. Compared to threading these through long pole sleeves, attaching poles to clips also gets easier. Most tents use clips along with short-sleeved poles with the intention of balancing the installation power, airing and ease. Colour-coded pole chips and corners also promote setup. Aluminium poles are more sturdy and last longer than fibreglass poles.

The rainfly refers to an additional, detachable cover which fits on the tent roof. It is meant to be used when you expect dew or rain, or whenever you wish to make the place warmer. They come in two kinds. The only type of roof allows for extra light plus views, and at the same time provides fairly good rain cover. The full-bodied form offers maximum protection against rain and wind.

Tent Materials

You should be conscious that a rainfly or canopy made of higher-denier fabric is stronger than a single denier fabric. In addition, a floor made from high denier fabric and seam tape helps to reduce the likelihood of seepage.

The use of mesh panels in the  windows, doors and ceilings allows you to see outside and promotes cross-ventilation that helps manage condensation. It is nice to have larger-sized mesh panels for camping in a dry, humid climate.
