A Step By Step Guide To Affiliate Marketing

Looking for an online income? Have you had a computer/laptop and a connexion to the Internet? So affiliate marketing might be the easiest and fastest way to fulfil your dream.

Here you will discover the 6 simple steps that will take you in as little as 48 hours from the complete beginner to the Affiliate Marketer.

Affiliate marketing

Is a performance-based marketing system in which a product vendor pays a commission to an “affiliate” when someone purchases their product. That “someone” has been referred by the “affiliate” to the vendor, and everything happens online: you have a web presence, usually, a website, to which you attract like-minded visitors, where you “warm them up” to the idea that the product you promote (as an affiliate) is the perfect answer to their pressing problem or need.

That “product” could be either physical (books, CDs, DVDs, clothing, jewellery, natural medicines, etc.) or digital (e-books, e-reports, software, online training courses, etc.).

By clicking on your affiliate link (on your site) your visitor will be redirected to the site of the vendor where the vendor will close the sale; much easier after you have warmed them up! If you buy the vendor’s product from your site user, you get paid a commission.

For example, if the product costs $100 and you get 50% commission, say, you’re going to get $50 paid! And all for, basically, introducing someone who has a pressing issue or needs someone who can solve that problem.

Affiliate marketing is perfect for beginners starting online as it has a very low entry barrier: it’s a very simple process that doesn’t need any specific technical skills, you don’t need your own product, and it doesn’t cost the earth to get started. You can actually go for less than $20!

And, you don’t have to sell, fulfil, stock, or deal with payment systems, and you don’t have to deal with customers; that’s what the vendor does.

Web Hosting

All you need is an Internet connexion and a laptop/computer and you’re good to go.

Because affiliate marketing is so profitable for both affiliate and seller, many “affiliate networks” have emerged over the years to help both affiliates and sellers manage their business much more efficiently and easily.

Through promoting their goods on these networks, vendors can draw affiliates and affiliates can easily find products to support. Once an affiliate decides to promote a particular product, an affiliate link / ID is assigned by the network so that sales of that product can be linked back to the affiliate.

The affiliate network also assumes responsibility for handling the flow of money either by electronic transfer or check between vendor and affiliate. It also charges a nominal fee for the service for both the provider and the affiliate.

There are many affiliate networks to choose from, but with “ShareASale” and/or “Amazon” a novice to affiliate marketing will quickly get started.

1. Choose Your Niche and Product

The first step is to choose the niche in which you want to operate. A “niche” is a group of people with very similar interests, such as those suffering from gout, broken relationships, finding car insurance, how to make money online, etc. But, of course, to make money, it must also have proven “buyers” in it.

So how do you find a profitable niche where you can promote a lot of profitable products?

Searching affiliate networks for niches that have multiple products that their stats tell you are selling well is a very quick way to do this. If there are lots of good selling products, you now realise that the market is a lucrative one and, like those products, the customers in that niche.

In other words, there is no second guess; you know for a fact that in that niche you can make money and for a fact you know which products are successful, unlike if you had to develop your own product!

Once you’re satisfied with a company, you’ll sign up for it as an affiliate, and you’ll get a unique link on your website. When a visitor clicks on that link, they go to the sales page of the vendor where the commission assigned to that product will be paid if they buy.

2. Get Your Domain Name

You need to get a domain name focused on your niche before setting up your website. For starters, weightlossforseniors.com, fastgoutcure.com. Do you get the idea? This will become your “address” website. “Siteground” is one of the most popular domain registrars.

3. Get Hosting

Next, you need your website hosting. This is where you will store and secure all your website files. They will be directed to your website when someone enters your domain name in their browser.

There are a lot of web hosting companies out there, but by going with “Siteground” you can’t go far wrong as a newbie.

4. Set-Up Your Website

Then you have to set up your website. This needs to be highly relevant to your selected niche and product and focus on the laser. For instance, having an “arthritis” website and trying to promote a product that cures “gout” won’t rank well in the search engines or make sales.

Although gout and arthritis are medically linked, most people don’t know that, so they’re going to search for “arthritis” solutions or “gout” solutions, and Google is going to present web pages that reflect that on their search results. So always stay focused on the laser!

To build your website, you need a platform or specialist software. Today’s by far the most popular platform is free “WordPress.” Most good hosting companies such as HostGator allow you to select WordPress in just a few clicks directly from within your hosting control panel.

5. Add Great Content

There’s a saying in marketing that “content is king!” I like to say that “GREAT content is king!” So the content on your website has to be highly relevant to, and laser-focused on, your niche, so that visitors to your site get great value from it (and know it’s great value).

For instance, if your website is about “health,” you write content about what causes it, its symptoms, how it is diagnosed, how it is treated, any natural remedies, any particular diets, changes in lifestyle, etc. Give top tips, recipes, the latest reports, news, and so on. That is, continue to add “value.”

6. Drive Traffic (Visitors)

Now, you can have the best website in the world, the best product(s) to promote that will definitely help your target audience; but if no one ever lands on your site, you may not have bothered!

So getting visitors to your website (called “traffic” in internet marketing) is critical to your success and helping all those people who are desperately looking for a solution to their problem.

There are two main ways of getting traffic; “pay for it” or “get it free.”

Paid traffic

It’s like other niche websites advertising, Google, Bing, Facebook, etc. You can also pay people who have large email lists in the same niche as you to send their list with a promotional email.

But when you start out, paying for traffic may not be the best option because you really need to know what you’re doing because when you don’t, it’s very easy to get “burnt.”

Free traffic

This comes from things like Search Engine Optimization (SEO), which is the art of getting the site on Google’s page 1, Bing, and other search engines.

You can also get tonnes of free traffic by sharing great content on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. (with links back to your site). You end up on your website when people click on your link.

In the video description, you can create quick, fast YouTube videos that can drive traffic to your site.

Posting comments on blogs and forums in the same or similar niche to you is a very common way to drive free traffic to your site.

Another very simple way to get free traffic is to post short articles such as EzineArticles in Article Directories. An example of this technique is the article you are reading right now.

This also has the added benefit of allowing other website owners in your niche to copy and post your article on their websites, but they have to keep your website link intact so you can get free traffic from your website too!

So, here’s your affiliate marketing checklist:

1. Choose Your Niche and Product

2. Get Your Domain Name

3. Get Hosting

4. Set-Up Your Website

5. Add Great Content

6. Drive Traffic (Visitors)

If you’re a marketing partner novice, you won’t be frustrated by all of this; it’s really easy to get started. Anyone and I mean anyone with an Internet connexion and a computer or laptop, can be up and running in as little as 48 hours, ready to start taking commissions. And everything without any previous experience.

Please note that this post contains affiliate links and any sales made through such links will reward me a small commission – at no extra cost for you
